ROV Power Solution Using Flywheel Energy Storage
Application: Offshore ROV
Solution: Generator + flywheel system
Result: Improved efficiency without upsizing

Overview
During onshore testing of a large remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Genny Hire delivered a hybrid power solution that significantly reduced fuel consumption, emissions and generator size, without compromising performance. By integrating a flywheel energy storage system alongside a diesel generator, the project demonstrated how offshore power demands can be met more efficiently and sustainably.
The Challenge
Large ROVs are used across offshore sectors including oil and gas, offshore wind, telecommunications and scientific research. These vehicles are highly capable but have demanding and dynamic power requirements.
The ROV in this project required substantial peak power to start and operate a 150 hp hydraulic power unit (HPU), as well as to support control, launch and ancillary systems. Traditionally, this would necessitate an oversized diesel generator, leading to:
- High fuel consumption
- Increased emissions
- Higher rental and logistics costs
- Inefficient generator loading during normal operation
Our client required a reliable power solution for pre-deployment testing that could manage peak loads efficiently while reducing cost and environmental impact.
The Solution
Genny Hire supplied a Punch Power 200 unit, a flywheel energy storage system by Dumarey Green Power, to operate alongside the client’s existing generator, avoiding the need for a larger unit.
The Punch Power 200 unit delivers rapid bursts of power during peak demand, smoothing load fluctuations and supporting the generator when high current is required. This enables the system to handle dynamic load demands more effectively.
This approach allowed the generator to meet the ROV’s power requirements more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Implementation
During onshore testing of a large remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Genny Hire delivered a hybrid power solution that significantly reduced fuel consumption, emissions and generator size, without compromising performance. By integrating a flywheel energy storage system alongside a diesel generator, the project demonstrated how offshore power demands can be met more efficiently and sustainably.
The Results
The hybrid power solution delivered clear, measurable benefits:
- 322 litres of diesel saved per 50-hour working week
- Approximately 43 tonnes of CO₂ saved annually
- Reduced generator rental and fuel delivery costs
- Improved generator efficiency and load management

Why It Matters
Offshore operators are under increasing pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining reliability and performance. This project demonstrates that hybrid power solutions can deliver immediate benefits without introducing operational risk or complexity.
By intelligently matching power supply to demand, Genny Hire helped the client achieve both commercial and environmental gains, supporting wider ESG objectives and providing a proven model for future offshore applications.
Conclusion
This case study highlights Genny Hire’s capability in designing and delivering innovative hybrid power solutions for complex offshore operations. Flywheel-assisted generation offers a practical, scalable route to reducing fuel use and emissions while maintaining the performance required in demanding environments.
Genny Hire would like to thank all teams involved in making this project a success and looks forward to supporting further advances in efficient and sustainable offshore power.
